Burkholderia pseudomallei Misidentified by Automated System

After returning from Thailand, a 35-year-old man from Switzerland was hospitalized with an abscess of the head. Material cultured from the abscess and adjacent bone grew a gram-negative rod, which was misidentified by an automated microbiology system as Burkholderia cepacia. The organism was eventually identified by molecular methods as B. pseudomallei.

PCR-based identification of Burkholderia pseudomallei.

DNA amplification techniques are being used increasingly in clinical laboratories to confirm the identity of medically important bacteria. A PCR-based identification method has been in use in our centre for 10 years for Burkholderia pseudomallei and was used to confirm the identity of bacteria isolated from cases of melioidosis in Ceará since 2003. This particular method has been used as a refe...

Identification and Characterization of Burkholderia pseudomallei K96243 Serine and Metallopeptidases

Burkholderia pseudomallei K96243, the causative agent of melioidosis, is reported to produce various extracellular products, including proteases. The role of these proteases in the melioidosis, however, remains obscure. Previous findings have hinted at the inherent pathogenicity of the protease during B. pseudomallei K96243 infection. We chose to study the two major families peptidases, i.e. se...

Reliability of automated biochemical identification of Burkholderia pseudomallei is regionally dependent.

Misidentifications of Burkholderia pseudomallei as Burkholderia cepacia by Vitek 2 have occurred. Multidimensional scaling ordination of biochemical profiles of 217 Malaysian and Australian B. pseudomallei isolates found clustering of misidentified B. pseudomallei isolates from Malaysian Borneo. Specificity of B. pseudomallei identification in Vitek 2 and potentially other automated identificat...

Fatal Burkholderia pseudomallei septicaemia.

Melioidosis, the infection caused by the saprophytic bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, is endemic in south-east Asia and northern Australia [1]. Sporadic cases have been reported from the Indian subcontinent and it is an emerging infection in India [2]. A low prevalence of antibodies against melioidosis among hospitalassociated groups in Colombo had been reported in 1976 [3], as well as a re...
